Missing teeth are not just a cosmetic issue – where teeth are missing, bone will deteriorate, causing profound changes to your face, your bite and your oral health. Your remaining teeth may also shift in position, causing several problems. At Woodcreek Dental Care, we use crowns to restore teeth back to their natural shape.
Your Calgary dental clinic may also use crowns to recontour the proportions of your teeth or to fill out teeth that are chipped or broken. Take a look at our Smile Gallery to see what can be done!
How are crowns fitted?
Crowns are usually fitted in 2 appointments: the first appointment will be to prepare the damaged tooth to receive and support the crown. At the end of the first appointment, we will fit you with a temporary crown to allow you to eat and function normally. At the second appointment, we will insert the crown created for you on your prepared tooth.
What are crowns made of?
Crowns can be made of gold or tooth-coloured porcelain or zirconium. Modern dentistry also offers the porcelain-over-metal crown whose base is metal to stand up to the biting force and whose top is porcelain to look natural.
What is the purpose of a bridge?
If you have one or more missing teeth, having bridgework can be an option. Your options include:
- A “fixed” bridge is a crown or a connected series of crowns that are anchored to crowns on the teeth on either side of the gap; a bridge may also be restored with implants.
- A removable bridge (partial denture) is not anchored to remaining teeth and may be a cost-effective solution for some patients.
Ask Dr. Hartley and the Woodcreek Dental Care staff your questions about crowns and bridges; we will be happy to explain your options.
Crowns restore strong function and create a beautiful smile.
